Pack Light, Move Well: The Carry-On Activewear Kit for Bali
Published by Yoga Republik · Canggu, Bali
Most people travelling to Bali for yoga or fitness overpack activewear. It's understandable — you want options, you're planning to practice daily, and the thought of running out of clean gear mid-trip is genuinely stressful. But activewear is heavy, bulky when folded, and takes up disproportionate luggage space.
The better approach is to pack a minimal, considered kit that covers the first few days, and then supplement it when you arrive. This guide covers exactly how to do that.
The Case for Packing Less
Canggu has outstanding activewear shopping. Yoga Republik stocks a full range of leggings, sports bras, shorts, and tops designed for this exact environment — and they're priced in a way that makes buying here a genuine advantage over packing three extra pairs from home.
There's also a practical quality argument. Activewear designed for Bali's climate — lightweight, breathable, fast-drying — performs better here than heavier gear designed for cooler, drier conditions. The leggings you love in a London winter studio may not be the right choice for a 30°C open-air class in Canggu.
So: pack a starting kit. Buy here. Wear it for the trip. Take it home.
The Carry-On Activewear Kit
Everything below fits comfortably in a carry-on bag alongside regular travel clothing. This is the minimum viable kit for a week of daily yoga practice in Bali.
2 pairs of leggings One from home, one you'll buy in Canggu on arrival or day two. Leggings pack flat — roll them rather than fold. A pair of well-made leggings weighs around 150–180g and takes up about the same space as a folded t-shirt.
2 sports bras Enough to alternate and wash between sessions. If you wear one to travel in, you only need to pack one spare. Bras pack small — tuck them inside a rolled legging.
1 pair of shorts Optional but useful for hot yoga, Pilates, or days where leggings feel like too much. They pack flat and barely register on luggage scales.
2 yoga tops or tanks Lightweight, versatile. These double as everyday wear in Canggu — you'll get more use out of them than you might expect beyond the studio.
1 loose layer A linen shirt or oversized tee that goes over activewear for the walk to class, breakfast, or any errand that requires you to look less like you're on your way to the gym. This is the single most useful item in a Bali travel wardrobe.
That's it. Five categories, seven or eight pieces total. Rotate, wash as needed, and buy any additional pieces when you arrive.
Washing on the Road
In Bali, activewear dries fast. Most pieces washed at night are fully dry by morning — the combination of heat and airflow handles it. A few notes:
- Cold rinse in the sink after each session is enough for pieces that aren't heavily soiled. This extends the time between full washes and keeps everything smelling fresh.
- Most accommodation in Canggu has laundry available cheaply and quickly. For a week-long trip, one laundry run mid-trip keeps everything fresh without carrying backup pairs for every day.
- Hang everything rather than leaving it damp in a bag. In the tropics, damp fabric in a confined space develops odour quickly.
What to Buy in Canggu
Once you arrive, a visit to Yoga Republik is the natural next step. The YR activewear line is designed specifically for this environment:
The YR leggings. Premium Nylon-Spandex blend — buttery soft, fully opaque, high-waisted, and built to last. Buy a second pair here and you're set for the trip with one to take home.
The YR sports bras. Medium to high support, designed to pair with the legging range. If you've only brought one from home, a second here means you're never caught with nothing to wear while the first one dries.
Shorts. Fitted, high-waisted, fast-drying. Ideal for hot Bali classes or beach-to-café transitions.
Tops. Relaxed-fit tanks designed to work in and out of the studio. Light enough to layer, structured enough to wear alone.
All of it packs flat for the journey home — and at Bali prices, buying a few pieces here is typically more economical than the equivalent at home.
The Luggage Weight Maths
For those checking bags rather than carry-on: the full YR wardrobe — two leggings, two bras, one pair of shorts, two tops — weighs roughly 800g–1kg total. That's less than a single pair of jeans. The space it takes up is minimal.
If you're flying home with extra pieces and luggage weight is a concern, the activewear is always the last thing to leave behind. It's the lightest, flattest, most compressible category in most travellers' bags.
A Note on Travel Shoes
The one category we'd suggest not cutting: footwear. Bring shoes you've already broken in. New sandals on a Bali trip are a common but entirely avoidable mistake. Pack trusted sandals, one pair of trainers if you run, and a comfortable pair of slip-ons for everything else.
