Why Your Yoga Leggings Might Be Toxic (And What to Wear Instead)

Yoga is a practice built on presence — awareness of the body, the breath, what you're taking in. It's worth applying that same awareness to what you're wearing when you practise. Because the activewear industry has a chemicals problem, and most brands don't advertise it.
This isn't fear-mongering. It's practical information that's increasingly easy to act on, because the better alternatives are now genuinely excellent.
The Problem: What's Actually in Synthetic Activewear
Most performance activewear is made from synthetic fabrics — polyester, nylon, spandex. The fibres themselves aren't the issue. The problem is what happens to them during manufacturing.
Antimicrobial treatments are applied to a significant proportion of activewear to reduce odour. The most common is triclosan — a chemical that has been shown to disrupt thyroid function and contributes to antibiotic resistance. It's absorbed through the skin during exercise, when your pores are open and body temperature is elevated. The European Union has restricted triclosan use in consumer products; it's still permitted in many other markets.
Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS) are used to create water-resistant and stain-resistant finishes. Often called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment or in the body, PFAS have been linked to hormonal disruption, immune system effects, and certain cancers. They leach from fabric during wear and washing. They are now being phased out under EU regulation but remain widespread in activewear sold globally.
Azo dyes — used to create vivid, stable colours in synthetic fabrics — can break down under certain conditions to release aromatic amines, some of which are carcinogenic. Again, EU regulation (the REACH standard) restricts the most problematic azo dyes; many markets outside Europe do not.
Formaldehyde is used in some fabric treatments to prevent wrinkling and improve colour retention. It's a known irritant and carcinogen at higher concentrations. Trace amounts in finished garments are common, particularly in products manufactured outside of tightly regulated markets.
Why It Matters More During Exercise
The concern with these chemicals isn't unique to activewear — they exist in plenty of clothing. What makes activewear different is the context of wear.
During exercise, your body temperature rises, your pores open, and your skin becomes more permeable. You sweat, which creates a transfer medium between the fabric and your skin. You wear the garment for extended periods in close contact with your body. You do all of this regularly.
None of this makes a single session dangerous. But if you're wearing the same leggings for daily practice over years, the cumulative picture is worth taking seriously.
What the Certifications Actually Mean
Navigating this is easier than it used to be. A few certifications have become reliable markers of cleaner manufacturing:
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — The most widely recognised textile safety certification. Products carrying this label have been tested by an independent institute and certified free from over 100 harmful substances, including many of the chemicals above. It covers finished products, not just raw materials. This is the baseline to look for.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — Applies primarily to natural fibres (organic cotton, organic wool). More relevant for casual yoga wear and loungewear than for performance synthetic activewear.
bluesign® — A manufacturing standard that certifies responsible resource use, worker safety, and reduced chemical impact throughout the supply chain. Less consumer-facing but a strong indicator of clean production.
If a brand can't tell you which certifications its activewear holds, that's worth noting.
Practical Choices
For most people, the answer isn't to abandon synthetic activewear entirely — the performance properties of nylon and spandex genuinely serve active practice in ways that natural fibres currently don't match. The answer is to be more selective about where it comes from.
Look for OEKO-TEX certification. This is the easiest filter. A certified garment has been independently tested for harmful substances. It's not a guarantee of perfection, but it's a meaningful improvement over unverified products.
Avoid "antimicrobial" marketing language unless the treatment is explicitly identified and certified. "Odour-control" finishes are often triclosan or silver-based; neither is necessary in a well-made garment washed properly.
Wash before first wear. Particularly with new activewear, washing removes surface chemical residues from the manufacturing process. This applies regardless of the brand.
Choose quality over quantity. Fewer pieces, made better, worn longer. Less contact with potentially problematic garments, and a lower environmental footprint.
