Meditation Cushions in Bali: Where to Buy and What to Look For

Published by Yoga Republik · Canggu, Bali

Bali is one of the better places in the world to start or deepen a meditation practice. The culture supports it, the pace encourages it, and the sheer density of teachers, studios, and retreat centres in Canggu and Ubud means you're rarely far from a guided sit.

If you want to take the practice home — or simply want your own cushion rather than using a studio's — this guide covers what to look for and where to find one in Canggu.

Why Buy a Meditation Cushion in Bali

The practical case: meditation cushions are bulky to ship internationally but relatively simple to carry home in checked luggage. The zafu (round cushion) in particular is compact enough to fit in a large suitcase or be checked separately without much hassle.

The price case: high-quality meditation props in Bali are priced more honestly than equivalent products in Australia, Europe, or the UAE. You're not paying import duties, retail markups for premium wellness brands, or shipping from overseas. What you get here for Rp 550,000–600,000 would cost significantly more at home.

The timing case: you're already in a context where you're sitting regularly, working with teachers, and developing your practice. Buying a cushion here — when the practice is alive and daily — is different from buying one at home months later, when it might sit in a cupboard.

What to Look For

Firmness. The most common mistake is buying a cushion that's too soft. A cushion that compresses under your weight stops providing the elevation the position depends on. The sitting bones should feel firmly lifted, not slowly sinking. Pick up the cushion and press it — it should feel dense and spring back.

Height. More hip flexibility = less lift needed; less flexibility = more. The right height keeps the knees below the hips when sitting cross-legged. If your knees are still above your hips even on the cushion, the cushion may be too low, or cross-legged sitting may not yet be accessible — in which case, consider the half moon cushion for kneeling practice instead.

Shape. The two main shapes serve different sitting positions:

  • Round (zafu) — for cross-legged and Burmese sitting. The most versatile shape for most practitioners.
  • Half moon (crescent) — for seiza, the kneeling position. The curved shape fits naturally against the calves and takes weight off the ankles and knees.

Cover material. You'll be washing it. A removable, machine-washable cotton or cotton-blend cover is practical. In Bali's humidity, anything that can't be washed regularly becomes a problem.

What We Carry at Yoga Republik

All three cushions are YR house brand — firm fill, washable covers, and made to last in regular practice.

YR Meditation Pillow Round — Rp 550,000

The traditional zafu. Firm, correctly sized for cross-legged and Burmese sitting. The most accessible starting point for most practitioners — it covers the most common seated positions and works from the first sit.

If you're not sure which cushion to start with, this is the one.

YR Half Moon Meditation Pillow — Rp 600,000

Crescent-shaped, designed for seiza. If you find cross-legged sitting consistently uncomfortable regardless of how long you've been practising — or if you have knee or hip sensitivity — kneeling on the half moon is often a revelation. The cushion fills the natural gap between the thighs and calves and takes the weight entirely off the ankles.

Available in blue, red, and other colours.

YR Meditation Cushion Set — Rp 1,900,000

The complete traditional setup: a zafu (round cushion) plus a zabuton (the large, flat mat that goes underneath). The zabuton cushions the ankles and knees from the floor, defines the practice space, and means you can sit on any surface — tiles, hardwood, uneven ground — without discomfort in the lower legs.

If you're setting up a home practice space, this is the version worth having. Available in blue and beige.

Can You Fly Home With a Cushion?

Yes. The round zafu fits in most large suitcases or can be checked as a soft extra item. The half moon is similarly compact. The cushion set with a zabuton is larger — the zabuton is about the size of a small floor mat — so factor that into your packing.
