Manduka vs Jade Yoga: Which Mat Is Right for You?

A Honest Comparison from Bali's Authorised Reseller

Published by Yoga Republik · Canggu, Bali

Two of the most trusted yoga mat brands in the world. Both available in Bali. Both genuinely excellent. So which one do you actually buy?

We sell both Manduka and Jade Yoga at Yoga Republik, and we get this question from customers almost every day. The honest answer is: it depends on how you practise. This guide breaks down the real differences — grip, material, durability, eco credentials, price — so you can make a decision you won't regret.

Quick answer: Manduka is for the serious daily practitioner who wants a mat that outlasts everything else. Jade Yoga is for the eco-conscious yogi who wants natural rubber grip and a lighter footprint. Both are excellent — the right choice depends on your priorities.

Brand Overview

Manduka

Founded in 1997 in the USA, Manduka set out to build the mat that yogis would never need to replace. Their flagship PRO mat is famously lifetime-guaranteed — and they mean it. The brand now spans everything from studio-grade PVC mats to natural rubber travel mats, and they're the go-to choice for yoga teacher training programmes worldwide.

Manduka is the brand that a lot of serious practitioners eventually land on after trying a few others. The mats are dense, heavy-duty, and built to handle daily use across decades.

Jade Yoga

Jade Yoga launched in 2000 with a clear mission: make the best natural rubber mat in the world, and give something back. Every Jade mat sold results in a tree being planted through their partnership with Trees for the Future — over 2 million trees and counting.

The mats are made from natural rubber tapped from rubber trees (no synthetic fillers), which gives them a distinctive earthy smell when new and a grip quality that many yogis swear is unmatched. Jade is particularly popular among practitioners who prioritise eco credentials alongside performance.

Grip: The Biggest Difference

This is where the two brands genuinely diverge, and it matters most in Bali's heat.

Manduka

The PRO and PROlite use a closed-cell PVC surface that requires a break-in period — some practitioners salt-scrub their new mat to open the surface. Once broken in, the grip is outstanding and consistent. The GRP (Grip, Renew, Perform) mat goes further: it's specifically engineered for sweaty practice with a top layer that gets tackier as moisture increases.

The eKO natural rubber range grips well from day one and performs reliably in moderate heat.

Jade Yoga

Natural rubber grips differently to PVC — it's more 'sticky' rather than 'rough-textured', and it works immediately without any break-in. In Bali's climate, the Jade Harmony performs well for most practice styles. That said, in extremely sweaty conditions (think hot yoga or a non-air-conditioned shala in peak season), some practitioners find a microfibre yoga towel helps.

Bottom line: if your practice is consistently high-heat and high-sweat, Manduka's GRP or the Yoga Republik PU rubber mat edges ahead. For most Vinyasa and Hatha practice, Jade's grip is more than sufficient.

Eco Credentials: Jade Wins

If sustainability is a priority for you, Jade Yoga has the clearer story.

  • Jade mats are made from natural rubber tapped from rubber trees — no synthetic materials, no PVC, no EVA foam.
  • Every mat sold plants one tree through Trees for the Future.
  • The manufacturing process avoids the chemical treatment used in most PVC production.

Manduka's eKO range is also a solid eco choice — natural rubber, no PVC — but the flagship PRO mat is PVC-based. That said, Manduka argues (with some justification) that a mat lasting 20+ years has a lower lifetime environmental impact than replacing cheaper mats every couple of years.

Both brands are well ahead of the generic foam mats you'll find in most budget shops.

Durability: Manduka PRO Is in a League of Its Own

The Manduka PRO's lifetime guarantee isn't marketing — it's a real commitment. These mats genuinely outlast everything else on the market, and many teachers still use their original PRO from ten or fifteen years ago. The closed-cell surface means sweat doesn't absorb into the mat, preventing the breakdown and mildew that shortens the life of most other mats in humid climates like Bali.

Jade mats are durable — with proper care (out of direct sunlight, rinsed occasionally, stored rolled not folded), a Jade Harmony will last many years. They are, however, more susceptible to UV degradation and don't have the same lifetime warranty. Avoid leaving a Jade mat in the Bali sun.

Which Performs Better in Bali Specifically?

A few things are unique to practising in Bali that are worth factoring in:

  • Heat and humidity: Bali's climate accelerates mat degradation. Manduka's closed-cell PRO handles this best — moisture stays on the surface and wipes off. Open-cell mats like Jade need to dry fully after each practice to prevent breakdown.
  • Outdoor and open-air practice: Many Bali shalas have semi-outdoor or open-air settings. Natural rubber (Jade) degrades faster with UV exposure — keep it in the shade. PVC (Manduka PRO) handles sun exposure better, though you still shouldn't leave any mat baking outside.
  • Travelling around the island: If you're moving between Canggu, Ubud, and Uluwatu, weight matters. The Jade Harmony at 2kg is more packable than the Manduka PRO at 3kg. Consider the Manduka PROlite (2kg) or eKO SuperLite travel mat as a compromise.
  • Studio rental mats: If you only practise occasionally and mostly rent from studios, a travel mat (either brand) is the smarter buy over a premium full-size mat.
