What to Wear to Yoga in Bali (Men's Guide)
Published by Yoga Republik · Canggu, Bali
Packing for yoga in Bali is a different problem than packing for yoga at home. You're likely doing more sessions per day, in more varied settings — open-air shalas, outdoor platforms, rooftop studios — and the heat and humidity change what "comfortable" means for activewear.
This is a practical guide to building a men's yoga kit for Bali: what to actually wear, what to avoid, and where to get it once you're here.
The Core Problem with Yoga Clothes in Bali's Heat
Most men's activewear is designed for temperate or air-conditioned conditions. The fabrics, fits, and constructions that perform well in a European or North American studio can feel heavy and clammy in Bali — especially once you factor in back-to-back sessions, multiple wears before washing, and the near-constant humidity.
The fix is mostly fabric: nylon/spandex over polyester, lightweight over substantial, minimal over structured. Everything else follows from that.
The Shorts
This is the most important piece in your kit, and also the one men tend to under-invest in.
What to look for:
- Nylon/spandex blend — softer against skin than polyester, wicks better in sustained heat, holds up through daily washing
- 5–7 inch inseam — long enough for coverage in standing folds and twists, short enough not to restrict deep hip openers and lunges
- Built-in liner — gives support without adding bulk, reduces shifting during movement
- Minimal hardware — drawstrings, pockets and waistband details are fine, but heavy elastic or bulky waistbands trap heat
What to avoid:
- Polyester/spandex shorts marketed as "yoga" or "training" — they work, but noticeably less comfortably in sustained heat
- Board shorts or swimming shorts — the fabric weight and construction aren't designed for floor-based practice; they bunch in seated poses and restrict movement in hip openers
- Compression shorts without an outer layer — technically fine for yoga, but most studios in Bali have a mix of indoor and outdoor settings where you'll want coverage
YR men's shorts are a nylon/spandex blend and our best-selling men's piece.
The Top
Bali's studios vary — some are fully open-air, some have fans, very few have air conditioning. Practicing without a top is common for men in outdoor settings; for anything more formal or enclosed, a lightweight top is worth having.
What to look for:
- Lightweight and breathable — a thin, well-ventilated fabric will feel cooler than nothing once you're moving and sweating
- Relaxed cut — not compressive; yoga requires full shoulder range of motion, and a tight top restricts this
- Eco fabrics if it matters to you — we stock YR bamboo and EcoVero tops and Uma Mamma (plant viscose), all of which feel significantly cooler and softer than polyester alternatives
What to avoid:
- Cotton — it absorbs sweat rather than wicking it, gets heavy, and takes forever to dry in humidity
- Thick polyester gym T-shirts — designed for air-conditioned gyms; you'll feel overdressed and overheated in an open-air shala
How Many Outfits to Pack
The standard calculation breaks down in Bali because most people end up doing more yoga than they planned. A rough guide:
For a one-week trip: 3–4 pairs of shorts, 2–3 tops. Daily practice means daily washing, and drying time in humidity can be 12–24 hours depending on fabric and airflow.
For two weeks or longer: 4–5 pairs of shorts, 3–4 tops. At this point you might be better off buying here — the quality-to-price ratio for activewear in Canggu is better than most places, and you avoid the baggage hassle.
If you're already in Bali and running short on kit (it happens — people plan for beach days and end up doing yoga twice a day), we're on Jl. Batu Mejan in Canggu, open daily 9am–9pm.
When to Choose Pants Over Shorts
Shorts are the right call for most hot, dynamic practice in Bali — but there are situations where a pair of yoga pants makes more sense.
Slower practices like yin and restorative cool the body down significantly, especially in fan-cooled studios, and shorts can feel cold by the end of a long hold. Early morning classes before the heat builds are another case. And Bali's temple and restaurant dress codes require covered legs — a well-made training pant that doesn't read as pure gym wear handles the studio, the temple, and dinner without a change.
We carry two YR men's pant styles: the YR Men's Yoga Pant (optimised for practice — tapered, four-way stretch, stays in place through dynamic movement) and the YR Men's Casual Pant (relaxed cut, hidden pockets, clean enough for daily life off the mat). Both are nylon/spandex, same technical fabric as the shorts.
The Transition Problem
One specific thing about Canggu: the walk from your villa to the studio, the yoga class, the walk to coffee, the session at noon, the beach in the afternoon — it all happens in the same clothes, often without time for a change.
This is why men's yoga kit in Bali should be chosen for versatility as much as performance. A well-made nylon short in a neutral colour and a lightweight bamboo top can do all of this without looking like you just rolled out of a gym. The YR and Vuori pieces in particular are designed with this in mind — performance fabrics in fits that don't read as purely athletic.
