Why We Made Our Own Activewear Line

Published by Yoga Republik · Canggu, Bali

We didn't start Yoga Republik to make activewear. We started it to be a yoga store — mats, props, accessories, a space for practitioners in Canggu to find everything they needed in one place.

But after a few years of stocking activewear from other brands, a pattern became impossible to ignore. Customers kept coming in looking for premium quality, the kind they associated with the global names they knew, but at a price point that made sense for buying on a Bali trip rather than budgeting for at home. The global brands had the quality. The quality had the price. The two things rarely met in the middle.

So we decided to make our own.

The Problem We Were Trying to Solve

The activewear market has a gap that's been there for a while. At one end: global brands with genuinely excellent products, excellent branding, and prices built to reflect decades of marketing spend, flagship retail leases, and the premium that comes with being a household name. At the other end: fast-fashion activewear that looks the part in a photograph and disappoints within months.

The middle ground — well-made, honestly priced, designed for real practice — is harder to find than it should be.

We knew what well-made looked like because we'd stocked it. We knew the fabrics, the construction, the details that determine whether a pair of leggings lasts one year or three. We had relationships with manufacturers who worked to those standards. The missing ingredient was simply a decision to apply all of that to our own product.

What We Decided It Had to Be

Before anything was designed or produced, we wrote down three things the Yoga Republik activewear line had to be. Not aspirationally — actually, verifiably, in the product.

Soft. Not "smooth for synthetic activewear" soft. Genuinely soft — the kind of soft that makes you reach for a piece of clothing because it feels good on your skin. The Nylon-Spandex blend we chose is premium specifically because it delivers this. It's not a cheap substitution for a premium material; it is the premium material.

Durable. A piece that feels great on day one and mediocre by month three isn't a product — it's a cost that repeats. We wanted pieces that could be washed twice a week for two years and still feel like themselves. The fabric weight, the seam construction, the waistband engineering — all of it was designed around longevity.

Honestly priced. This one matters to us as much as the others. The price of premium activewear from global brands isn't mainly a reflection of the product's quality — it's a reflection of brand value, retail infrastructure, and the cost of maintaining a global marketing operation. We don't have any of those things to pay for. So we don't charge for them.

What you pay for a Yoga Republik piece is the fabric, the manufacturing, and a reasonable margin. Nothing more.

What Happened When We Launched

We weren't sure how it would land. Yoga Republik had a good reputation as a store, but making our own activewear was a different claim — we were saying, implicitly, that what we made was worth wearing over the brands we already stocked.

The response was quicker and more definitive than we expected. The leggings sold out in the first weeks. Customers came back and asked for the same pair in different colours. Reviews started appearing on Google — independent, unsolicited — comparing the quality favourably to Lululemon, noting the price difference, saying they wished they'd found us earlier.

One review that stuck with us: "I came in looking for leggings similar to Lululemon and found even better ones." We didn't ask for that. Nobody prompted it. It's just what someone experienced and chose to write down.

Where We Are Now

The Yoga Republik activewear line now includes leggings, sports bras, shorts, and tops. It's designed to work as a complete wardrobe — pieces that mix and match, that move from mat to café without looking like gym wear, that hold up to daily practice and regular washing.

We've added seasonal colourways as the line has grown. The core pieces — the black leggings, the essential bra styles — stay consistent because they work and because our customers come back for them.

We also stock them alongside the brands we've always carried. If you come into Yoga Republik, you'll find Manduka, Jade Yoga, Alo, and the others — and you'll find our line too. We're not trying to replace the established brands. We're offering an alternative that, for many of our customers, turns out to be their preferred choice.

The Honest Version

Making activewear didn't turn out to be complicated. The complication was deciding to do it. Once we knew what we wanted — soft, durable, honest — the path to getting there was straightforward.

What we didn't anticipate was how much it would change conversations in the store. When you make something yourself, you understand it differently than when you stock it from someone else. We know exactly what the fabric is, why we chose it, how it was made, and what to expect from it. That confidence comes through, and customers notice it.

If you want to try the line, we're in Canggu. Come in and feel the fabric — it's the most convincing thing we can say about it.
